London X, Campania, Columbia Road - The End

It's funny how in a big city it's the small, hidden gems that are almost the most appealing. Finding Campania along the quiet, damp and chilly Columbia Road was like a little piece of heaven. I utterly fell for the place.

Hassua, miten isossa kaupungissa melkein eniten vetoavat kaikkein pienimmät, piilossa olevat salaisuudet. Campanian löytyminen kostean kolealla, hiljaisella Columbia Roadilla oli kuin palanen taivasta. Ihastuin paikkaan ikihyviksi.

London IV, East London, Shoreditch

One day we headed towards East London aiming for Columbia Road with its promise of an abundance of interesting little vintage and craft shops, artists' studios and cafés. We wound our way through some fascinating old working class quarters and stopped off at Bermondsey Antique Market.

Yhtenä päivänä suuntasimme kohti itä-Lontoota tärppinämme Columbia Road, jonka varrella olisi luvassa vaikka mitä mielenkiintoisia vintage- ja käsityöläisputiikkeja, taiteilijoiden työtiloja ja kahviloita. Matkalla kieputtelimme itäisen Lontoon kiehtovien vanhojen työläiskorttelien kautta ja poikkesimme Bermondsey Squaren antiikkimarkkinoilla. 

Reaching Columbia Road, we couldn't hide our disappointment; all of the shops were closed and apparently only mainly open during the Flower Market on Sundays, when the area is filled with hustle and bustle. But there's always a silver lining. The quiet neighbourhood had a magical atmosphere and we found a small Italian place open, which served us the best coffee of our trip. I'll post some photos from the little gem soon. As icing on the cake - upon leaving the area, on the quaint and lovely Ezra Street we bumped into none other than Alexa Chung and her rockstar boyfriend, who must have been taking a little walk close to where they live. I'm a true fan :) Next time we'll head there on a Sunday, but I sure ain't complaining! 


Perillä Columbia Roadilla nieleskelimme pettymystämme, sillä kaikki kaupat olivatkin kiinni ja kuulemma lähinnä auki vain sunnuntaisten kukkamarkkinoiden yhteydessä, jolloin seutu täyttyykin vilinästä. Mutta ei niin huonoa, ettei jotain hyvääkin. Noissa hiljaisissa kortteleissa oli maagisen hieno fiilis ja pieni hurmaava italialaispaikka oli auki, jossa joimme matkamme parhaat kahvit. Paikasta vielä matkaraportin päätteeksi kuvia erikseen. Pisteenä i:n päälle on ihan pakko kehaista - alueen jättäessämme törmäsimme piskuisella Ezra Streetilla itse Alexa Chungiin ja tämän rokkistarapoikaystävään, jotka olivat ilmeisesti päiväkävelyllä kotinsa lähettyvillä. Olen ihan fani :) Ensi kerralla suuntaamme tuonne sunnuntaina, mutta nytkään en valita!

London VIII, Anthropologie

Of course I had to pay a visit to the Anthropologie stores, which have landed in London's Regent Street and King's Road all the way from America. These pictures were taken in the Regent Street store. I was awe-struck by its magnitude, three floaty floors joined together by an amazing wall of plants, filled with the most enticing objects, romantic clothes, wonderful books. But I think I was mostly mesmerised by all the visual delights and creative thoughts behind the stores' visual layout.

Ameriikan ihmettä Anthropologie'ta piti tietysti käydä hämmästelemässä. Putiikkia on nyt Lontoossa kaksin kappalein, yksi Regent Steetillä ja toinen King's Roadilla. Nämä kuvat on räpsitty Regent Streetin liikkeessä, jossa hämmästelin sen valtaisuutta, kolme väljää kerrosta, joiden välissä alhaalta ylös ulottuva huikea kasviseinä. Tuolla iski suorastaan runsauden pula, houkuttelevia kotijuttuja, romanttishenkisiä vaatteita, kerrassaan ihania kirjoja. Silmät kiiluivat kaikkein eniten kuitenkin visuaalisten kikkojen ja luovien idisten perään, joilla nuo tilat oli loihdittu.

London VI, Liberty

The mock-Tudor style department store Liberty is a true favourite, which beckons me on every single London trip. The creaky floorboards, Liberty print, purple paper bags, antique furniture and latest fabulousness create a unique concoction. There's an elegant, timeless quality about the store and I can't quite imagine being in awe of any other department store in quite the same way.

Tudor-tyylinen Liberty on Lontoon kestosuosikkini ja ehkä ainoita paikkoja, jonne on joka matkalla aivan pakottava tarve palata. Viekoittelevasti narahtava vanha puulattia, sametti, Liberty-kuosi, violetit paperikassit, vanhat huonekalut ja uudet huikeudet sulassa sovussa. Omintakeinen ja ajaton enkä usko, että millekään muulle tavaratalolle laulaisin samanlaisia ylistyslauluja.
